Skype Backdoor?

Doug Mohney over at FierceVOIP reports on a potential Skype back-door, enabling those with access to listen in to Skype conversations.  If true, I’d love to understand the technology of tapping a P2P app (proprietary or SIP-based forking I assume?)

VOIP and UC PilotHouse Award Winners

Nemertes Research has just published our first PilotHouse awards for VOIP and UC vendors.  These awards are based on data we gathered from over 425 end-user organizations in which they rated their vendors in a variety of areas.  It’s important to note that these are the customers speaking, not us.  Please contact me if you’d like any additional information.

Best wishes to Lou D'Ambrosio

Avaya announced this week that CEO Lou D'Ambrosio is stepping down due to health reasons.  Charlie Giancarlo will step in until a permanent replacement is found.  I've had the opportunity to briefly meet Lou at a number of industry events, and I've seen him speak numerous times.  He is a dynamic individual who brought bold leadership to Avaya.  I wish him well on what hopefully will be a rapid road to recovery.

iPhone Mania Runs Wild

The latest round of iPhone mania kicked off yesterday with the introduction of iPhone 2.0 at the Apple WWDC.  There has been some speculation that Apple is setting it sights on the corporate market, intent on challenging the dominance of RIM's BlackBerry and Microsoft's Windows Mobile-based devices.  I've had a number of chances to play with an iPhone, and I have an iPod Touch, but I can't imagine using an iPhone as a BlackBerry replacement.  Why?  The lack of a true keyboard.  I find it nearly impossible to type on an iPhone with anything near the speed of typing on a BB.  Not to mention the lack of things like dedicated speed-dial buttons.  Still, it's hard to argue with the success the iPhone has enjoyed so far.

I'll be blogging on news out of the Enterprise 2.0 conference in Boston this week.  The first big news are social networking enhancements for SharePoint.

UC Interoperability

I posted some thoughts over on NoJitter about UC interoperability based on what we've seen from interviews with about a hundred or so end-user organizations.

If you are an end-user and are interested in participating in our research, please drop me a line.

Internet Storm Clouds Loom

Here's an article about the FutureNet discussion on Internet infrastructure I discussed yesterday.

FutureNet Thoughts

I've been involved with the FutureNet conference (formerly MPLScon) since its inception in 2000.  It's always been a conference focused on highly technical content....a LOT of highly technical content.  I lost track of how many sessions we ran this year, but it was around 40-50.

For me the highlight was the "Beer and Pizza Shootout" featuring some of the leading minds in Internet architecture including John Day, Mike O'Dell, John Curran, Dave Schaeffer, Stuart Elby, and Scott Bradner, with Nemertes' own Johna Till Johnson serving as moderator.  I also really enjoyed the IPv6 debate in which Todd Underwood of Renesys and NANOG got to discuss IPv6 options with John Curran and Norm Schillaci of Global Crossing.

Even though I get to put the program together, I'm still blown away by the depth of the content, and the ability of the event to attract superstar speakers.

I've posted some further comments at the Enterprise 2.0 Blog on some of the discussions around key Internet architecture trends.  Overall I think the discussions at the conference highlighted that we need to pay a lot more attention to the infrastructure that underpins the Internet.  We also have set up a FutureNet group on Facebook to continue some of the discussions begun at the event.
