WebEx launches "Fall 2007"

WebEx (now part of Cisco) launched "WebEx Fall 2007" today.  Here's a link to the press release.

Kind of an odd name, but the real value add seems to be a new suite of recording capabilities for webinars, meetings, and training sessions.  The release mentions that WebEx Fall 2007 will allow on-demand streaming and downloading of recorded sessions.

Fun(?) with Mobile Instant Messaging

A couple of weeks ago I was fortunate enough to be able to trade my clunky BlackBerry 7520 for a shiny new silver Verizon 8830.  It was reminiscent of the time I swapped my old P3 Dell laptop for a brand new PowerBook G4 a few years ago.  I felt like I had jumped ahead about a dozen years on the technology curve.

So last weekend I searched the Crackberry forums for mobile IM clients.  The most popular one out there is Ramble, but it only supports AIM.  But the crown jewel of BB IM apps seems to be JiveTalk.  I installed it and fired it up, configured it with all my accounts, and logged in.  So what happened?  I got a series of messages on my laptop telling me that I was now signed on in more than one place so I was being disconnected.

Why is it that at this point in time public IM services don't allow you to sign on at more than one location at the same time?  How do IM services expect to support an increasingly mobile user population without this capability?

iPod Touch

Apple just announced a revamped iPod lineup, to me the most intriguing device is the "iPod touch" which is basically an iPhone without the cell phone capabilities, though it still includes WiFi support for browsing the Internet, watching YouTube videos, and downloading music from the iTunes store.

To me this is the jackpot device, I already have a work-provided BlackBerry so I could never justify buying an iPhone, but after trying to watch a movie on my iPod video I could certainly see the need for a wide-screen iPod.  My guess is you are going to see used video iPods flood eBay as folks try to unload them to buy the iPhone touch.

The Great IPv6 Experiment

If anything is going to drive adoption of IPv6, this is it

We're taking 10 gigabytes of the most popular "adult entertainment" videos from one of the largest subscription websites on the internet, and giving away access to anyone who can connect to it via IPv6. No advertising, no subscriptions, no registration. If you access the site via IPv4, you get a primer on IPv6, instructions on how to set up IPv6 through your ISP, a list of ISPs that support IPv6 natively, and a discussion forum to share tips and troubleshooting. If you access the site via IPv6 you get instant access to "the goods".
