What's motivating organizations to deploy MPLS? - Network World

From the article: "What's motivating organizations to deploy MPLS?"

When we drilled down into the survey data, we found a strong relationship between the deployment of VoIP and the deployment of MPLS. In particular, the vast majority of companies that are either making their initial deployment of VoIP or expanding their VoIP deployment are also planning on expanding their QoS policies. The vast majority of these companies expect to expand their QoS policies by implementing MPLS.

Interesting correlation between VoIP and MPLS.

Comments

I always take every opportunity I get to point out that MPLS is not a requirement for QoS, but of course the enterprise is not actually implementing 'MPLS the technology' they are using MPLS as a nickname for 'MPLS-based IP-VPNs'. An MPLS-based VPN does offer the sort of QoS they need vs. their legacy ATM or Frame Relay network, but it is not necessarily the only option for deploying QoS in the enterprise WAN in support of a VoIP migration.

I would have hoped that a reporter working for network world would have corrected the terminology in his article on behalf of the IT people he interviewed, especially a reporter who states MPLS as one of his specialties.
